Design for Well-being: An Inclusive Approach to the Design of Consumer Products 2004.09.25

With several notable exceptions, the assistive device market for people with disabilities is categorized today by high costs, low acceptance by consumers, and low reliability. The exceptions are rehabilitation industries that can benefit from economies of scale, such as wheelchairs, and those products that can also be used by able-bodied people, such as speech recognition software and sidewalk curbcuts. Many other assistive devices meet the needs of too few people to be manufactured in quantity, need lots of individualization to be usable at all, and do not benefit from market-based design iteration to result in a high-quality product.

This talk will discuss some of these reasons in more detail and present a strategy for modifying the process of product design to be more inclusive for people who have motor, sensory, cognitive and other impairments.

It is only by absorbing assistive device development into general product design that our society can respond effectively to the needs of people with a wider range of abilities. This approach is called "Design for Well-being", and centers on defining product use outcomes in terms of the consumer's life goals.
