外国語としての英語の学び方
Day-long Language Learning: Opportunities for Students, Parents, Teachers and Schools 2004.03.11

講座概要

In Japan as in USA, students learn foreign languages mostly through seat time in class and silent study outside class. This makes it very difficult for the context and activities of learning to match students' learning preferences, which often involve much more doing, feeling, seeing and thinking than occurs in the traditional classroom. A small number achieve excellence within traditional ways, but the majority learn about language in school classrooms and then do not learn to use it. The idea of "day long" language learning is an energizer for school language programs. It changes students' ideas on how to learn and can support parents, teachers and administrators as they abandon an over-emphasis on class and book study time. Instead, everybody involved has to find good contexts for language learning and practice through special activities outside class. Examples of this are attendance at English medium events, experiencing English media, helping native English speakers do something in Japan, or communicating through the Internet. There is also excellent synergy betweeneffective information technology training and day-long learning.

There has to be commitment and rigorous follow-up to change school culture. The payoff, however, comes in much more independent and active learners, as well as a lot of fun for all involved.
