<講演要旨>
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing is emerging as a potential disruptive technology that can radically change content distribution value chains and the concepts of massively parallel computing. The concepts of P2P technology are not new, but the requirements for more cost-effective use of installed computer networks and development of "killer applications" for emerging wireless services are accelerating demands for P2P applications These applications include instant messaging, file sharing, and massively parallel computation. P2P technology is beneficial to consumers because applications provide users with richer mobile, spontaneous communications to other individuals or small groups. Corporations benefit from the P2P collaborative platform because users can "self-organize" themselves into a spontaneous structure that is focused on specific project schedules. P2P frameworks also offer corporations and research organizations with the ability to perform intensive computations and transaction analysis that are significantly more cost-effective than traditional supercomputing methods. P2P platforms, however, are not a revolution, but an evolution. Significant barriers must still be overcome, however, as P2P platforms emerge. There is not yet a generally accepted definition of what a P2P platform is, and there are no widely accepted standards to which vendors can design. In addition, there are not yet credible management, security, and auditability processes that IT managers can rely upon to chart a path to mainstream corporate acceptability. P2P platform developers are resolving these technology adoption challenges. Finally, because P2P platforms are built over open source systems, no single vendor can dominate the entire market, although companies such as Microsoft, IBM, HP and Sun are now using P2P technologies to support their competitive strategies for the next generation of the Internet.
